Cloud Computing Becomes a Reality for DDC Customers

We are seeing a broad range of drivers for desktop virtualization as organizations continue along the path to IT as a service and modernize their desktop architecture

Today at VMworld 2010, Wanova, Inc. announced that Durable Data Corporation (DDC) has begun deploying solutions supported by Wanova and VMware to expand its desktop management service offerings. Leveraging VMware View™ and Wanova Mirage™ software, DDC – a service provider specializing in onsite and cloud-based infrastructure management – can now manage its customers’ desktop environments whether they are centralized or distributed, physical or virtual, or a combination of all of these.

Organizations face significant IT challenges, balancing investments in data center infrastructure with the human resources necessary to build an optimal architecture and maintain these systems over time. Consequently, many of these organizations are looking to reduce IT complexity by outsourcing their data center and desktop management to cloud-based service providers. DDC’s services address all of these needs, easily scaling to meet new requirements as a customer’s business grows. Further, with many organizations struggling to establish their migration strategy to Windows 7, DDC brings new capabilities from Wanova and VMware to the table.

“Together, Wanova and VMware give us the tools to address the full range of our customers’ desktop management needs,” said Robert Ross, CEO of DDC. “Wanova Mirage™ lets us centralize distributed desktops in the data center for management and data protection, while still giving end users native PC performance, as well as the ability to preserve their personalization and work offline. Combined with VMware View™, we can also mobilize these desktops to hosted virtual machines to meet a variety of use cases.”

One of DDC’s primary services is a cloud-based desktop management offering called DuraDesk™, which has been deployed in a number of DDC customer environments. Powered by Wanova, DuraDesk centralizes each customer desktop in the DDC data center. DDC can manage, deploy and continually enforce a single Base Image across many desktops, while preserving end user personalization. All desktops are protected, and because of Wanova Mirage’s extensive network optimizations, DDC can quickly restore a desktop to a remote PC – even over the WAN. If an end user loses or breaks their laptop, DDC can provision their Mirage-stored desktop into a virtual machine managed by VMware View, making it accessible from any endpoint via a thin client protocol.

“DuraDesk has been a huge benefit to us. It saves time, it saves money, and it makes our applications available and recoverable from anywhere,” says Ty Jennings, IT Manager of XCaliber, LP. “We're in the oil and gas industry, so our people are all over the country, and DuraDesk makes remote access and branch office support a no brainer. And, when Hurricane Ike hit Houston in 2008, it shut our main facility down for weeks. DuraDesk made our applications and data available, and we kept rolling.”

“We are seeing a broad range of drivers for desktop virtualization as organizations continue along the path to IT as a service and modernize their desktop architecture,” said Vittorio Viarengo, vice president, end-user computing products, VMware. “The combination of VMware View™ and Wanova Mirage enables service providers to reduce the costs of managing their desktops and application infrastructures while providing the best end user experience.”

“Our customers are leading innovation when it comes to managing, supporting and protecting PCs in today's distributed infrastructures,” said Issy Ben-Shaul, CTO of Wanova. “We look forward to our continued work with VMware to give organizations the flexibility to deploy, manage and mobilize their desktops as needed to achieve their business goals.”

DDC’s DuraDesk, powered by Wanova, is available now, and pricing starts at $19.95 per month per desktop.
