The Child and Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Program for ADHD

“The proper identification of people with ADHD is crucial to the process of assisting them in the school setting, workplace and community" explains Dr. Stacey Devaux, Psychologist, who is a Coordinator of the Program.

The Child and Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Program for ADHD, a division of East End Psychological Services (http://www.eepservices.org), provides testing and state-of-the-art treatment for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) across the lifespan. The Program is especially innovative in the variety of services available for adults.

“The proper identification of people with ADHD is crucial to the process of assisting them in the school setting, workplace and community. Despite several years of research supporting ADHD as a genetic and biologically-based condition, many dismiss symptoms as an excuse or avoidance tactic,” explains Dr. Stacey Devaux, Psychologist, who is a Coordinator of the Program. “ADHD affects millions of children and adults, many of whom are never properly diagnosed. When we utilize empirically-derived, scientifically-proven measures to assess for ADHD, we are in an excellent position to intervene and help these individuals maximize their potential. Moreover, adults with ADHD have been neglected far too long.”

Staff psychologists begin the evaluative process by obtaining detailed background information. Next, clients are tested for executive skills such as attention span, self-control, working memory and organizational abilities. Psychoeducational testing is provided when there is evidence for learning or other cognitive problems. Social-emotional and personality variables are assessed as well. Direct consultation with school staff is part of the assessment process for school-aged children. Interviews with significant others are utilized when evaluating adults.

The Program uses a multidisciplinary approach to treating ADHD by coordinating services among the school system, work setting, family, physician, and psychologist. This team approach has been shown to be most effective, yet is often underutilized by many professionals. Treatments are highly individualized and include behavior therapy, collaboration with the school system, consultation with medical personnel for medication management, as well as individual, family, and relationship counseling. Moreover, the staff examines conditions that often co-occur with ADHD such as learning disabilities, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse and treats those conditions concurrently.

The Program successfully identifies individuals with ADHD across the lifespan and provides a multifaceted approach to intervention that includes supporting the person within the school setting, family, and work environments. With children, the clinical staff intervenes by directly working with school personnel. When treating adults, the staff addresses issues within relationships, in the workplace and among the families of the individual by serving as a skills coach and expert clinician.
