Fargo Insurance, an independent insurance agency located in Martinsburg, West Virginia, is using their Facebook page for a charitable cause.

Frank Fargo, CEO of Fargo Insurance, asked the agency's marketing director to put together a benefit program via Facebook to help a client of theirs who has been struggling with colon cancer. "We were sitting at 230 Facebook Fans. Anything over that number we were willing to make a donation to the client," said Marshall DeMeritt, Marketing Director.

Fargo is donating $2 for every new Facebook Fan until August 31. The response to the program has been bigger than the agency expected.

"It was fantastic to watch the number of fans keep growing and growing. We never expected this type of immediate response," says DeMeritt. "People we've had no contact with were passing along the message."

As of Monday morning, the company's Facebook page (http://www.Facebook.com/FargoInsurance) had 862. The company raised 632 Facebook fans in 4 days, resulting in over $1,000 for the client in need so far.

"It was neat to see the growth every time I logged into the page," says Marshall. "This was an opportunity to support a local family that has been doing business with us. The satisfaction of helping one of our insured is enough; the growth of our Facebook page was just an added bonus."

The agents at Fargo believe many insurance companies claim they care and will help their clients, but many don't follow through. The comments left on the company's Facebook page further prove this.

"Wow, this is great. I can't believe that an insurance company's doing something like this...Great job," commented one Facebook Fan.
