Pearson, the global leader in education, technology and services, today announced the appointment of a new five-member advisory board for its UExcel credit-by-examination program. These prestigious leaders in international studies, online learning, educational assessment and higher education will collaborate with UExcel's executive team to develop and grow the credit-by-examination program.

Pearson and Excelsior College, an accredited, nonprofit distance-learning institution, launched the UExcel program--which includes a range of college-level subject area examinations--to respond to the growing demand from students and parents for ways to save money on college tuition. Offering students the opportunity to turn their knowledge into college credit, credit by examination is accepted by thousands of colleges and universities.

The inaugural members of the UExcel Advisory board are Teresa D. Amatuzzi, director, Enrollment Management, Community College of the Air Force; Richard Garrett, managing director, Eduventures; William G. Harris, Ph.D., executive director, Association of Test Publishers; Mary Leppert, founder and publisher, The Link Homeschool Magazine; and Meredith M. McQuaid, associate vice president and dean, International Programs, University of Minnesota.

"We are privileged that these five education experts will be sharing their insights to help us continue to shape the development of our new credit-by-examination program," said Randy Trask, senior vice president of market development for Pearson VUE, Pearson's computer-based testing business. "We know that with their assistance we will grow the UExcel program in new ways that meet the educational needs of college students."

Patrick Jones, dean of assessment at Excelsior College, concurred, "We look forward to our kick-off meeting with this remarkable group of education leaders and to the opportunity to learn more about how they believe credit by examination can help today's college students reach their academic goals."

Each member of the new UExcel Advisory Board has significant expertise in a specific area of education, such as assessment or continuing education, as well as in working with specific student demographic groups.

Teresa D. Amatuzzi brings deep experience with the military student community to her new role on the UExcel Advisory Board. As the director of enrollment management at the Community College of the Air Force at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, she supports and administers the updates of more than 2.6 million records for resident, non-resident and distance learning programs worldwide for a student body of more than 350,000 service members.

A nationally recognized expert and author on adult and continuing education, Richard Garrett has more than 12 years of experience researching higher education trends worldwide, particularly online learning, non-traditional students, internationalization, and commercial activity. Prior to joining Eduventures, he was deputy director of the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education in the United Kingdom.

As executive director of the Association of Test Publishers, William G. Harris is an advocate for the testing industry, frequently providing expert testimony on legislative initiatives on testing and assessment at the federal, state and provincial levels. His areas of expertise include including electronic testing, test security, digital copyright, educational assessment and the impact of the Internet on the economics and future of testing.

An expert on homeschooling, Mary Leppert is the founder and publisher of The Link Homeschool Magazine and The Link Homeschool Magazine Online, the highest-circulation, all-inclusive homeschool publications in North America. The author of the best-selling book on homeschooling, "The Homeschooling Almanac," Leppert is often sought as an advisor and speaker on homeschooling.

Meredith M. McQuaid brings deep experience and understanding of the international student experience to the UExcel Advisory Board. In her role at the University of Minnesota, McQuaid works with the administrative staff to create global opportunities by expanding international and interdisciplinary components of teaching, research, and public engagement activities; recruiting and supporting international students, faculty and staff; and facilitating development of critical interdisciplinary and international partnerships important to the university's strategic plan.
