George Fox University’s School of Business is offering strategic human resources management courses this fall that can be taken as either a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) concentration or as credit toward a graduate business certificate.

George Fox’s HR concentration or certificate offering is the only graduate-level program in the Pacific Northwest recognized by the Society for Human Resource Management, the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management with 250,000 members in more than 140 countries, according to the organization’s website.

The George Fox HR concentration and graduate certificate consist of three consecutive courses (nine credit hours). The first course is scheduled to start in late October. The concentration aims to prepare students for influential and strategic work in the field of HR, focusing on the areas of leadership, management and administration.

The courses are also offered through the graduate certificate program, aimed at practicing HR professionals as well as those who hold a graduate business degree but wish to pursue in-depth studies in strategic human resource management.

The strategic human resources management concentration is one of three MBA concentrations – finance and organizational strategy are the others – that offer students the opportunity to specialize in a specific area of business.

“Our current MBA students have long expressed a desire for the opportunity to study specific areas of business in greater depth,” said Dirk Barram, professor of business and interim dean of the School of Business.

According to data collected by the Society for Human Resource Management, 84 percent of senior HR professionals considered an MBA with a concentration in HR to be “valuable” or “extremely valuable” for a career in HR (SHRM, 2005). In the same survey, 54 percent of senior HR professionals indicated that an MBA with a concentration in HR would assist graduate students in their career more than a graduate degree in HR alone.

George Fox offers two MBA options – a Full-Time MBA program at its Newberg, Ore., campus that allows students to complete their degree in 11 months, and a Part-Time MBA program that can be completed in 26 months (or 32 months, with a concentration) at the school’s Portland Center (near Tigard), as well as in downtown Portland or Boise, Idaho.

In addition to its two MBA programs, George Fox’s School of Business offers a 56-credit-hour Doctor of Business Administration program that prepares Christian business educators to teach effectively in the college or university classroom.

At the undergraduate level, the university offers degrees in finance, economics, accounting, global business, entrepreneurship, marketing and management.

George Fox University is ranked by Forbes as the top Christian college in the Pacific Northwest and among the highest Christian colleges in the country. George Fox is the only Christian university in the Pacific Northwest classified by U.S. News & World Report as a national university. More than 3,300 students attend classes on the university’s campus in Newberg, Ore., and at teaching centers in Portland, Salem, and Redmond, Ore., and Boise, Idaho. George Fox offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 40 majors, degree-completion programs for working adults, five seminary degrees, and 12 master’s and doctoral degrees.
