Swisslog, a leading provider of automated materials transport and pharmacy automation solutions for hospitals, today announced that 19 of the top 25 most profitable hospitals in the United States according to Forbes magazine are its customers, including 9 of the top 10.
Forbes' first-ever list of the 25 most profitable hospitals in the country contains a surprising mix of big and small, from the Mayo Clinic to Ohio State University to several hospitals owned by the for-profit HCA chain. The list, compiled in collaboration with the American Hospital Directory, is based on operating revenue and expense data found in cost reports that each hospital must provide annually to Medicare. Forbes concluded, “If you have a choice, pick a hospital that makes money over one that doesn't. There's some evidence that solid financial performance goes hand in hand with fewer complications.”
The article that accompanied the list reported that many industry observers see high hospital profits as a sign of operational efficiency and quality patient care.
“Increased operational efficiency and improved patient safety are the primary benefits our materials transport and pharmacy automation solutions bring to our customers,” said Charlie Kegley, president of Swisslog Healthcare Solutions’ North American division. “From our pneumatic tube systems that whisk medicine, lab specimens and medical supplies from one department to another to our drug packaging and dispensing products that reduce the chance for medication error by eliminating human touches, Swisslog products allow hospitals to deliver quality healthcare faster, safer and with greater efficiency. As a result, it’s our fundamental belief that we play an important role in assisting those customers that made the Forbes list achieve greater operational efficiency and, therefore, high profits.”
