The Hackney Literary Awards is a prestigious writing competition that recognizes excellence in original poetry and fiction with prizes at the state of Alabama and national level. The annual competition awards $5,000 in prizes for poetry and short fiction ($2,500 national and $2,500 state levels: 1st place, $600; 2nd, $400; 3rd, $250).

The Hackney Literary Awards, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, announces its 2010 competition for best novel, short story and poetry.

The national competition awards $10,000 in prizes to contestants each year. This year, applicants should take notice of the following changes:

The Hackney Literary Awards, sponsored by the Cecil Hackney family of Birmingham, Ala., was established in 1969. The Hackney family is known for its success in manufacturing and investments, and for its generous support of the arts.
