DayStar Properties, a leading developer on the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica has made the switch to an all electric fleet of GEM cars. An active participant in the evolution of the Jaco Beach community, DayStar Properties is committed to promoting Jaco as a vacation paradise while improving the quality of life for the residents of the Central Pacific region through environmentally responsible planning.

The new GEM cars (Global Electric Motorcars) are manufactured by a wholly owned subsidiary of Chrysler Group, and are 100 % electric with zero tailpipe emissions. Classified as Low Speed Vehicles (LSV) or Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) the GEM vehicle is legal on all Costa roads and street legal in most U.S. states (on roads with speed limits posted at 35 miles an hour or less). With a top speed of 25 mph and a range of up to approximately 30 miles per charge, GEM battery-electric vehicles are the eco-friendliest, most cost effective transportation option for this community dedicated to sustainable tourism practices. The cost per mile using electricity is approximately 1/16th of the cost for the same distance fueled by petrol in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is a renowned world leader with the goal to be a completely carbon free nation, currently drawing 90% of its energy from renewable sources, the largest source being hydroelectric. As tourism has become the largest export and provider of employment, conservationism and social responsibility mandate the policies of sustainable tourism. As a company, DayStar has integrated this national goal into their development planning so that tourism revenues support and protect the very environment that visitors and residents alike treasure.

Jaco Beach, once a sleepy surf town, now boasts a coastline of luxury and boutique condominiums. Five beachfront condominium projects totaling 197 condominiums have been completed by DayStar Properties, they are: Paloma Blanca, Bahia Azul, Bahia Encantada, Diamante Del Sol (Phase 1) and The Palms. Phase 2 of Diamante Del Sol is planned to include conference facilities, live performance and event spaces and a spa. For information on renting one of these luxurious beachfront condominiums, please contact a member of the DayStar Guest Services Team at 1-800-784-4173 or visit http://www.daystar-properties.com .

With the addition of a new soccer team, the Jaco Rays, and a new stadium complex underway the question becomes; will the GEM cars be able to keep pace with the bustling resort town at 25 miles per hour? “Yes! It’s not unusual to see people riding horses through town, and the predominant mode of transportation is still the bicycle” comments Sarah Perez, Senior Director of Operations of DayStar Properties. “We encourage our guests to abstain from renting a car for the duration of their visit. Leave the driving to the locals and or use an electric car to zip into town.” All of the DayStar Properties are walking distance or a short bike ride into town and transportation can be arranged for day trips such as waterfalls, zip lines, volcanoes, Manuel Antonio National Park and turtle nesting reserves.

While in Jaco, slow down and enjoy Pura Vida, the life that puts Costa Ricans at the top of the Happiness Index for longevity and quality of life.

Some of the other green initiatives that are integrated into DayStar’s sustainability platform include:

  • Reduced and reclaimed water consumption
  • Elimination of chemical cleaning and swimming pool agents
  • Energy efficient appliances
  • Biodegradable in-room amenities
