Downtown Houston's only revolving rooftop restaurant will re-open in the Hyatt Regency Houston hotel after more than two years and $1.4 million in renovations.

We've been fielding questions for two years from locals and hotel guests asking when Spindletop will reopen

Spindletop, downtown Houston's only revolving rooftop restaurant which has hosted thousands of marriage proposals, anniversary celebrations and other special occasions, has announced plans to re-open in the Hyatt Regency Houston hotel October 6 following a comprehensive $1.4-million renovation.

The iconic downtown Houston restaurant, which originally opened in 1972 atop downtown's Hyatt Regency Houston hotel, closed after Hurricane Ike in 2008.

The reopening of the Houston restaurant signals the return of a signature, downtown dining destination unlike any other. Guests take the "Spindetop Express," a glass-enclosed elevator up 34 floors to the circular designed dining room. The glass-walled restaurant makes a continuous revolution (one turn every 45 minutes) offering 360-degree views of the city where guests can catch a majestic sunset, spot downtown landmarks and view the twinkling lights of the city. The multi-level restaurant ensures everyone has an unobstructed view.

Led by the hotel's long-time executive chef, Jean Moysan, the culinary team has created the new Spindletop menu with a focus on fresh seafood items including seared tuna and seafood paella. Other menu items include pasta entrees; signature salads, fresh-tossed tableside; and homemade desserts from the pastry shop.

Spindletop will continue to attract locals looking to celebrate special milestones from birthdays, and proms to wedding anniversaries and marriage proposals. In fact, it is estimated that more than 1,800 couples have become engaged in Spindletop since opening in 1972.

"We've been fielding questions for two years from locals and hotel guests asking when Spindletop will reopen," says Allison Butcher, Spindletop Manager. "The final product will truly be the crowning achievement to our $50-million hotel renovation."
