Cloud-based Service Simplifies Multi-location Management, Protects Caswell County from Liability

OpenDNS, the world’s largest and fastest-growing provider of Internet navigation and security services that make networks safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced Caswell County has deployed OpenDNS’s cloud-based recursive DNS service for Web content filtering and multi-location management. Caswell County is located in northern N.C., and is home to almost 24,000 people.

The county oversees 14 physical locations, which house 24 departments including social services, emergency medical services, a public library and the health department. Robert Webb, the information technology director for the county, deployed OpenDNS across Caswell County for Web content filtering that’s easy to set up and manage without an appliance or any onsite equipment.

Previously, Caswell County was using a router with built-in content filtering. However, this solution wasn’t an optimal one. “It was very limited and required us to already know of offending content and enter each site or keyword in manually,” explained Webb. Until a website that violated the Caswell County’s Technology Resources Policy was manually entered into appliance, it wasn’t blocked. With OpenDNS’ Web content filtering, Webb can block entire categories of content — as well as choose to always allow, or never allow specific websites.

Easier management of multiple locations is an additional benefit of using OpenDNS. “Using OpenDNS allows me to take a look at each network from one central location. If I stopped using OpenDNS, I would miss the centralized management of multiple networks the most,” he said.

Ultimately, deploying OpenDNS across Caswell County will “save us money as well as protect us from liability,” Webb said.
