KONE Inc, one of the leading companies in the elevator and escalator industry, has partnered with WalkingSpree to provide the activity tracking portion of their innovative corporate wellness program called Elevate Your Health. The program focuses on making employees aware of their own health risks, taking responsibility for their health, and increasing their activity levels.

KONE launched their Elevate Your Health in January for non-union U.S. employees. Additional KONE employees in Mexico and Canada requested participation in the WalkingSpree portion as Elevate Your Health expands. The program will be offered to more participants next year.

“The wellness of our employees is most important because we care about their happiness and the well-being of their families. A healthy employee tends to be more engaged with our business and customers and can return home with energy and enthusiasm at the end of the day. From a financial perspective, KONE pays millions in employee medical expenses each year, and these costs continue to increase. There is a direct correlation between poor health and long-term health care costs. We believe that our focus on wellness will help us control these expenses. I am encouraged by the participation, enthusiasm and positive morale generated by Elevate Your Health and WalkingSpree,” says Vance Tang, KONE Executive Vice President & Area Director – Americas.

David Fortosis, Director of Employee Services at KONE, designed the Elevate Your Health wellness program and selected WalkingSpree as their partner company for the activity tracking. He commented, “We are making measurable, positive progress towards a healthier KONE. Employees are improving their health and losing weight. More than 50% of U.S. employees have registered their WalkingSpree pedometer and posted at least 100,000 steps so far. WalkingSpree has delivered a KONE-customized website, state-of-the art computer connected pedometer that uploads data automatically, activity tracking, challenge tools, and targeted messaging to motivate and engage our employees. Their flexibility allowed us to select the features we wanted for our population; we will be adding more next year. Our folks have enthusiastically created their own walking clubs for friendly competition and ribbing between business units.”

WalkingSpree also delivers regular, targeted messages to engage employees such as congratulatory emails for reaching targets and reminder emails to encourage commitment. These personalized ‘intelli-messages’ provide tips for activity and healthy eating, and highlight individual achievements. Fitness facts, tips to encourage exercise in daily routines, and individual progress towards goals are also included. Nutrition messages include tips and recipes, as well as promotion for the food tracker and body tracker features of the website.

Hiran Perera, WalkingSpree CEO, said “KONE has embarked on a visionary long-term wellness program with health screenings, activity tracking and health costs data analytics. WalkingSpree is proud to be a partner of this comprehensive program which will measure the cost savings on health care claims and absenteeism.” He also commented, “We encourage and support the KONE employees who are tracking their activity as part of Elevate Your Health. KONE step targets are being achieved and exceeded, and the competition is growing to win the significant rewards provided by KONE. Rewards based on regional participation with minimum standards to win prizes that includes paid vacations to free healthcare are very motivational to KONE employees. These people are having a lot of fun using WalkingSpree while lowering their health risks and establishing healthier habits.”
