For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community. The Tidewater Council, BSA will be celebrating this legacy during a three-day event -- October 15 - 17, 2010.

Entitled Scout Fest 100, the event will be held at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater, 3550 Cellar Door Way, Virginia Beach, VA 23456 and attended by thousands of Cub, Boy and Venture Scouts, their families, Scout alumni and others. The three-day activities include camping, demonstrations, presentations, displays, workshops and entertainment. The general public will be invited to attend on October 16.

Joe Maniscalco (Norfolk) and James Wheaton (Chesapeake) are co-chairs for the event.

“Scout Fest 100 will showcase the impact that a century of Scouting has had on the lives Americans as well as of thousands of youths and their families in Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina,” explained Richard P. "Rick" Anoia, Council President.

“Locally, it will help support the activities of more than 9,500 youths now involved in Scouting in the Tidewater Council BSA as we prepare for 2011 when the Tidewater Council BSA will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary,” he explained.

The Tidewater Council’s Scout Fest 100 event begins on Friday, October 15. More than 7,000 Scouts, Scout families and others are expected to attend the weekend events and Scouts will begin arriving around 5 pm.. As tents are pitched around the field, the sounds of camaraderie will fill the air.

Saturday promises a day filled with fun and adventure for the entire community. Breakfast made, Scouts will begin preparing for the day of activities -- demonstrations, displays, presentations, workshops and entertainment. The gates for the public will open at 8:30 am.

More than 100 local groups will be on hand with live displays ranging from aviation to woodcarving. Static displays and interactive presentations such as public safety, ham radios and military organizations will also be featured. Food concessions will also be on hand for the family and friends expected for the day. Musical entertainment is also planned throughout the day – starting at 10 am -- with more than 10 groups participating.

The Scouts’ night time event will include a parade as well as an awards ceremony and arena show, featuring several acts, including national comedian -- Sinbad -- and music by (Joe) Maniscalco / (Kevin) MaC Band and Carbon Jam. The public is invited to both the day and evening events. A VIP event will also be held during the evening with music by The John Baldwin Band.

Tickets for the arena show -- starting at 7 pm -- will be available for purchase after Sept. 10 by calling the Tidewater Council BSA at 757.497.2688.

The event concludes on Sunday morning following a non-denominational fellowship service.

This is an important event for Scouts, according to Co-Chair Joe Maniscalco. “There is much to be learned and much to see during all activities. There will be opportunities for camping and event participation. Also workshops and demonstrations. And a variety of entertainment -- both on the Midway stages during the day and on the Arena stage during the evening.

“We are pleased to offer this event for all Scouts and for the public, “Maniscalco explained.

“In every era, and throughout numerous trends of the past century, Scouting has been steadfast in helping youths find – in themselves and the world around them -- more than they thought possible. Scouting impacts youths many ways -- by instilling values in such areas as developing character, community responsibility and physical fitness.

"To be a part of this organization in any manner is to make a lasting difference in the life of a youth,” Maniscalco said.
