Washington, D.C. Area Church Examines The Bible's "Bit Players."

New Series Is Called CLINT HOWARD

From an opportunist named Doeg, to a brother called Quartus, to a left-handed judge, and a couple of influential, but often overlooked women, CLINT HOWARD will put compelling faces on some obscure Biblical names.

A Washington, D.C. area church will spend several weeks this autumn answering the question, “Who’s THAT?”

David R. Stokes, senior pastor of Fair Oaks Church in Fairfax, Virginia, is delivering a new series of talks called CLINT HOWARD. The 8-part series is being shared on Sundays (gatherings at 9:00 & 10:45 a.m.) from September 12th through October 31st.

“I have been thinking for some time now about examining some of the minor characters in scripture. And during a meeting with our creative team we began to explore possible titles for the series,” according to Rev. Stokes. “Our process is pretty freewheeling with ideas being brought up, and just as quickly shot down—it’s sort of like that old Dick Van Dyke sitcom from the 1960s, where a staff was writing for the fictional Alan Brady Show.”

But few on the Fair Oaks Church staff, other than Pastor Stokes (54), would resonate with that reference. Most members of the team are more than 20 years younger than their senior pastor. Stokes says, “working with younger people keeps me challenged to be relevant and to constantly find ways to communicate the timeless message in a timely way.”

Actor CLINT HOWARD regularly appears playing bit parts in movies directed by his older—and more famous—brother, Ron Howard. Pastor Stokes says: “He’s the poster child for people we recognize in film after film, but find ourselves hard pressed to put names with those faces. They’re familiar, but largely unknown. This new series will examine several such characters in the Bible. In some cases there are only a few words about them. We’ll take that small ‘dna’ sample and develop practical applications.”

From an opportunist named Doeg, to a brother called Quartus, to a left-handed judge, and a couple of influential, but often overlooked women, CLINT HOWARD will put compelling faces on some obscure Biblical names. And along the way some vital truths will be shared.

In addition to his pastoral duties, David R. Stokes is an author, columnist, and broadcaster. He has written for Townhall.com, The Richard Nixon Foundation, The Cold War Times, Preaching Magazine, Crosswalk.com, The Jewish Press, and The Intelligencer—Journal of U.S. Intelligence Studies. His writing reveals a passion for history and culture as well as faith-related matters. His new book—a compelling true crime/history story from the 1920s—will be out in early 2011.

Stokes is a frequent guest host for Salem Communications talk shows in markets around the country and shares two regular features called LOUD ON PURPOSE and BELTWAY BLOG on various stations, including across North America via XM Satellite Radio. Along with his early ministry education in theology and divinity, he holds degrees in history and political science. Stokes has been married to his wife, Karen, for 34 years. They have three daughters and seven grandchildren.

Fair Oaks Church (4601 West Ox Road, Fairfax, VA 22030) is located on a beautiful 23-acre campus in Northern Virginia. The congregation is composed of members from more than 30 nations. Their mission is to be LOUD ON PURPOSE because LIFE’S TOO SHORT TO BE QUIET!
