Will use financing to increase adoption of its high-performance open-source relational database management system (RDBMS).

VoltDB high-performance open-source SQL DBMS

VoltDB is a major step forward in database technology.

VoltDB, Inc., a leading innovator of high-scale database systems, today announced it has closed $5 million in financing from Kepha Partners and Sigma Partners. VoltDB will use the additional capital to grow adoption and build community awareness of its ground-breaking open-source database software.

VoltDB’s revolutionary database design allows companies to easily scale database performance to unprecedented levels. VoltDB has been shown to seamlessly grow a system to process millions of transactions per second on a cluster of inexpensive, off-the-shelf servers. It is a simpler, more flexible alternative to sharded MySQL, and offers NoSQL-like flexibility without giving up transactional data integrity (ACID) or more powerful relational capabilities.

"VoltDB is a major step forward in database technology," said John Mandile, managing director of Sigma Partners. "We see a lot of urgency scaling database applications today. VoltDB’s unique combination of product innovation and open-source business model gives it and its customers an edge in a market ripe for disruption."

"VoltDB has nailed the web-scale database solution," said Jo Tango, partner at Kepha Partners. "There are a lot of database application developers performing unnatural acts in order to gain better transactional database performance…sacrificing relational data models, SQL, and data integrity (ACID) with NoSQL solutions, or even worse, making applications unnecessarily complex by sharding traditional databases. VoltDB provides superior scalability and price/performance without these sacrifices. We think VoltDB will have a very successful future."

As part of this funding, VoltDB will be adding to its Board of Directors Kepha Partners partner, Jo Tango, and Sigma Partners managing director, John Mandile.

“The endorsement of partners as strong as Sigma and Kepha is a real testament to the solution that VoltDB has built” said Scott Jarr, VoltDB President and CEO. "We are thrilled to be adding such valuable board members to the VoltDB team."

VoltDB was co-founded in 2009 by Dr. Michael Stonebraker, considered one of the founding fathers of the database industry. The VoltDB performance advantage stems from an in-memory, distributed database partitioning concept that is optimized to run on today’s memory-rich servers with multi-core CPUs.

Availability and open source licensing
VoltDB is available from voltdb.com. The open-source Community Edition is licensed under the GPL and is available free of charge. Pricing for annual support subscriptions starts at $15,000 per year.

About VoltDB
Founded in 2009 by DBMS R&D pioneer Mike Stonebraker, VoltDB eliminates traditional price/performance and scalability bottlenecks via an innovative DBMS architecture that combines in-memory processing, a shared-nothing scale-out architecture and a unique solution to ensure high-availability 24x7. Unlike NoSQL alternatives, VoltDB does not sacrifice relational capabilities, SQL or ACID (transactional integrity), so there's less of a learning curve, less coding and less complexity.
