Award shows have become a national pastime and millions of fans tune in not only to know who won, but also to see who and what their favorite stars are wearing. Celebrities discussed fashion as they walked the red carpet to the 62nd Primetime Emmy® Awards on August 29 at NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles, which is just a few blocks from FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising’s main campus.

Kyra Sedgwick, who graced the stage when she won the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama for her role on the show The Closer, chose a beautiful burgundy strapless gown from FIDM Graduate Monique Lhuillier’s fall 2010 collection. Fashion critics lauded Sedgwick for looking simple and elegant. This was her first Emmy win for The Closer, the TNT crime drama.

A favorite of Hollywood stars such as Drew Barrymore, Carrie Underwood, Kristen Stewart, and Jewel, Lhuillier studied Fashion Design at FIDM before starting her bridal and evening business. “I didn’t even know how to cut and sew before I came to FIDM,” Lhuillier has said. Today, she is a household name thanks to her modern romantic confections.

Glee’s Jenna Ushkowitz walked the red carpet in a red silk chiffon bow gown, which was lined in pink, designed by FIDM Alumni Kevan Hall. She accessorized with gold and diamond Neil Lane jewelry, a Judith Leiber clutch bag and a side-swept ponytail.

Known for creating gowns that are reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour, Hall has dressed stars such as Katherine Heigl, Vanessa Williams, Tina Fey, Virginia Madsen, and Edie Falco. A native of Detroit, Hall won a scholarship to the fashion design school and while studying in California he took a life-changing trip to Europe, sparking a lifelong love of luxury and haute couture.

“These beautiful actresses can select any design in the world and I am honored when they choose one of my designs,” Hall said.

With four dynamic California campuses, FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising is the premier west coast fashion design college, educating for careers in fashion, graphic design, interior design, and entertainment. FIDM’s graduates include renowned fashion designers like Monique Lhuillier, Emmy® and Academy Award® award-winning costume designers, top fashion industry executives, and entrepreneurs.
