Nicole Brinkley, who founded WORDforTeens.com, says that teens do read beyond Harry Potter and Twilight. Her site celebrates books with an upcoming Halloween Haunts contest -- book giveaways, author interviews and so much more!

Teens DO read!

Teens are reading and writing, so ignore the reports that they aren't. They aren’t just reading Harry Potter or Twilight. Check out Brinkley’s page and you’ll see that teens read many types of books and turn to sites such as hers to discuss their favorites.

Brinkley’s site, WORDforTeens.com, (WORD stands for Worthy of Reading and Discussing) was founded when she was 14 years old and is now one of the most popular teen young adult book blogs on the Internet today. In the beginning, she blogged about the most recent book she purchased or borrowed from the library. She gave it a rating of 0 to 10 (the best) and compared it to something else she read in that same genre, letting her readers know which one she preferred. She has since interviewed many best-selling authors including Sophie Jordan, Sci-Fi author Todd McCaffrey, and Rachel Hawkins. The authors love her creative questions!

To celebrate that teens really do read, Brinkley is hosting Book Spooks, a celebration running from October 17 to October 31 that surrounds a love of all things book and all things Halloween. After all, Halloween is so much fun - and books are so tied into this holiday! WORD will have feature days, some fun activities, book features, and some fantastic giveaways. Some activities include: Cast Your Villain: Who is your favorite villain? Is it the pixie Opal Koboi from the Artemis Fowl series? Or maybe it's President Snow from The Hunger Games!
