Switching to OpenDNS from Sonicwall reduces server footprint, eases management of six-school network

OpenDNS, the world’s largest and fastest-growing provider of Internet navigation and security services that make networks safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced Caroline County Public Schools has deployed OpenDNS’s cloud-based recursive DNS service to help achieve CIPA compliance and reduce server footprint. Caroline County is home to six public schools with 4,500 enrolled students, and is located in Bowling Green, VA.

In order to receive federal E-rate funds, public school districts must be CIPA compliant. Part of the compliance requires that schools filter certain types of content, and be able to generate and share reports on network activity. Caroline County Public Schools was previously using an appliance-based solution from Sonicwall, however, the device was unreliable and the district grew frustrated with device failover. A combination of that and several other unacceptable problems with the Web content filtering appliance prompted IT staff to look for a new solution.

Network Administrator Wade Murray was already familiar with OpenDNS, having previously used it. OpenDNS’ cloud-based service makes managing multiple networks, such as Caroline County Public Schools’ six campus locations, an easier task. Without any physical appliances, Wade was able to roll out OpenDNS easily and reduce the district’s server footprint as well.

Deploying OpenDNS also means that Caroline County Public Schools can have a new filtering system in place immediately, instead of waiting for lengthy budget approvals to go through.
