PDF3D® Version 2 series comprises a major architectural overhaul, new compression efficiency and encoding options

The announcement of PDF3D Version 2.0 marks the start of a new era in the evolution of 3D PDF. A new look API, and upgraded integration interfaces are included in over 70 updates to the previous release. The most significant operational change is new geometric data compression. Anyone can view and manipulate 3D data sets on laptop or desktop without the native application, using the ubiquitous free Adobe® Reader. To see the results first hand, visit http://www.pdf3d.co.uk.

Among the many new features available to users of Version 2.0 are:

  • Enhanced 3D encoding and compression options related to PDF/Engineering standards
  • Updates to the OpenSceneGraph, VTK, GRID, Coin3D, STL and AVS/Express interfaces
  • New look, animation added to PDF3DReportGen
  • Automatic recognition of geometry duplication
  • Automatic recognition of texture image duplication
  • Streamlined Library packaging
  • Major documentation update and new source code examples

Substantive results of the new 3D compression are illustrated by industry standard STL model files reduced by a factor of 22x, for instance from a 5.23 MiB STL to a 230KiB PDF file (similar for other formats) revealing substantially better compression than Acrobat® Pro Extended 9. Commenting on the significance of PDF3D version 2, Ian Curington, CEO of Visual Technology Services, comments, "Focused effort on a leaner and more robust architecture along with foundation development of geometry compression techniques are now ready to greatly improve technical 3D collaboration. Faced by challenges posed by U3D in production environments, we are excited to move to high performance alternatives. This is a very significant step forward and means a new class of models can be emailed in a standard PDF."

PDF3D (http://www.pdf3d.co.uk) is an innovative independent 3D technical publishing technology for 3D models viewable in PDF documents. Covering a wide range of applications from geospatial, geology, aerospace, architecture, product packaging, and online sales & marketing, PDF3D makes it practical to distribute interactive 3D documents to everyone with the free Adobe Reader. The ISO9001:2008 certified professional services team provides custom 3D PDF workflows, system integration and novel user interface development services.
