CDPE Designation Reaches 25,000 Real Estate Professionals Trained in Short Sales, Foreclosure Avoidance

Industry’s leading short sale education organization reaches landmark membership level; tens of thousands of real estate professionals trained to help homeowners avoid foreclosure, particularly through short sales.

The Distressed Property Institute, LLC today announced it has reached the milestone of 25,000 real estate professionals trained in foreclosure avoidance tools and strategies through the Certified Distressed Property Expert (CDPE) Designation course. Having reached this level in less than three years, CDPE is the fastest-growing independent designation in real estate industry history.

“We are incredibly proud of the inspiring work our members are doing across the country to help homeowners avoid foreclosure,” Alex Charfen, co-founder and CEO of the Distressed Property Institute, said. “This movement of educated agents is growing rapidly. With nationwide unemployment at 9.6 percent, underemployment over 18 percent, and mortgage delinquencies among prime loans above 10 percent, there has never been a greater need for agent education in short sales and foreclosure avoidance.”

In a short sale transaction, the lien holder accepts the selling price of the home, even if that amount is less than (“short” of) the borrower’s mortgage balance. This foreclosure avoidance option is less harmful to a homeowner’s credit score, will not challenge employment or security clearance, and allows the seller to be eligible for Fannie Mae- or Freddie Mac-backed loans in a shorter period of time.

“As the real estate industry and local markets change, the CDPE training consistently evolves to provide real estate professionals with the most effective education to help homeowners in need,” Charfen added. “We will continue to help agents become vital advocates for their clients and communities. The CDPE membership movement is one that gets stronger with each new designated agent.”

The growth of the CDPE Designation has been assisted by the endorsement and support of top brokerages, including RE/MAX, LLC; Keller Williams® Realty, Inc.; and CENTURY 21 Real Estate, LLC, as well as industry icons such as Chairman and Co-founder of RE/MAX Dave Liniger, and Founder of Buffini & Company Brian Buffini.
