if you like outdoor games, you'll love orienteering

Have fun learning to navigate through Springfield VA's Lake Accotink Park using a map and compass to get from one trail to another. This is an easy sport to learn, a great team building activity, and ideal for families who enjoy the outdoors. This event is part of the National Orienteering Day, a set of events conducted nationwide in September by Orienteering USA, and giveaways and randomly awarded prizes from event sponsors will be distributed.

Participants don't need to sign up in advance; just show up between 12pm and 2pm this Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Lake Accotink and a Quantico Orienteering Club (QOC) member will help with some tips before the run or hike is started. A variety of courses from beginner through seasoned adventure racer complexity will be available. Participants may come solo or in groups.

Most orienteering events have a small fee to offset the price of land access and the production of the highly detailed maps. Other than bringing the entry fee ($10 per person, or less if in a group or a junior), just wear a smile, clothes suitable for a hike or run in a local park, and if possible, bring a compass. Compasses may also be borrowed from QOC.
