MobilityWorks in Akron Ohio Increases Capacity Due to Growth in the Commercial Van Market.

MobilityWorks of Akron Ohio, a major manufacturer and retailer of accessible vans for people using a wheelchair, has signed a ten-year lease agreement on a 28,000 square foot building adjacent to its current 33,000 square foot manufacturing facility.

The newly-leased building will house the expansion of its Dodge/Chrysler rear-entry minivan conversions, Ford E-Series full-size van conversions and Conquest wheelchair motorcycle production. More than 18,000 square feet will be dedicated to manufacturing while with the remaining space will be used for the warehousing of parts and materials. The address of the newly leased building is officially listed as 1300 Kenmore Blvd, which is right next door to its existing facility on Wilbeth Road, where they have been located since 2003.

With its new capacity for production, MobilityWorks will also gain much need parking space for its growing number of employees and for the dozens of new vehicles waiting to be converted for wheelchair access. The new building sits on 3.7 acres of land that will facilitate over 250 parking spaces, most of which will be taken up by new Ford Transit Connect vans and Ford E-Series cargo vans waiting for production. They typically have more than 300 vans on-site that are constantly being replenished as part of Ford Motor Company’s bailment pool.

MobilityWorks has seen tremendous growth with its Ford Transit Connect mobility line, launched in the fourth quarter of 2009, and has significantly increased its commercial sales nationwide with the acquisition of Accubuilt Mobility in January of 2010.

“This building will allow us to grow our business and better server our customers” said Denny Summers, Vice President of Operations. “We’ll be able to respond to orders much quicker and we’ll be much more efficient” added Summers, noting they have been squeezed for space for several years, even before the acquisition. All Accubuilt Mobility production was moved from Indiana to Akron, OH in the first quarter of the year.
