The release of version 0.3 of our open source software is an important milestone for the company because it is easier to maintain, faster than ever and offers a powerful platform for processing network data.
Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) September 20, 2010
Andy Alsop, President and CEO of Packet Analytics along with Ben Uphoff, Vice President of Research announced today the latest version 0.3 of its flagship Net/FSE software for collecting, analyzing and searching high volume network data.
According to Uphoff “The release of version 0.3 of our open source software is an important milestone for the company because it is easier to maintain, faster than ever and offers a powerful platform for processing network data. Since licensing the software in 2008 from Los Alamos National Laboratory and releasing it into open source our developers and contributors have been working hard to make the application ready for enterprise deployment. This release represents an opportunity for enterprises to deploy a high-volume, open source network data collection tool for network security and performance optimization.”
Version 0.3, includes the addition of the following features:
- Log processing platform - A dynamic plugin architecture allows users and developers to write and deploy custom code modules to perform tasks like adhoc data analysis, statistical processing and network behavior analysis. Net/FSE handles the capture and processing of data, allowing developers to focus on the problem at hand.
- Additional log type support - Net/FSE supports a variety of commercial and open source log formats for popular products including intrusion detection systems, firewalls and network flow systems. Adding support for new log formats is easier than ever and can be configured dynamically to meet the changing requirements of enterprise networks.
- Improved disk management - Net/FSE is designed to give network security professionals long-term visibility into network log data. The system will automatically compress data as necessary to maintain long-term search capabilities. For users with limited disk resources, the system can also be configured to automatically delete older data, creating a fixed length rolling window into the data.
- Streamlined and robust codebase - The open source codebase has been refactored for maintainability and extensibility. Legacy code has been removed and performance is improved. As a result, the system can be easily extended and modified and embedded as a data processing and search platform for a variety of solutions in the network security and management field.
Alsop went on to say that “we released the code to open source as a method for gaining adoption of the software in the network security and management fields. Network security professionals really ‘get’ this product once they have it in their hands. Based on our support requests and downloads we are beginning to see the fruits of going to an open source strategy.”
