The U.S. Airport and Seaport Police (USASP) will honor retired U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, the national incident commander overseeing the federal response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, at the Tri-Association Awards Dinner on Nov. 3 in New York City.
Allen will receive the Fred V. Morrone Memorial 9/11 Award from the USASP in recognition of his decades of work defending the nation. The award is named for the late superintendent of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department, the highest-ranking of 37 Port Authority officers to perish at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
This marks the USASP’s first year of participation in the annual event, which is sponsored by the Security Industry Association (SIA), the Electronic Security Association (ESA) and the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA).
“We are thrilled that Admiral Allen will be joining us at this year’s Awards Dinner,” SIA CEO Richard Chace said. “He has devoted his life to helping secure the nation, and he has done exceptional work since being handed the extraordinarily challenging task of guiding federal actions related to the oil spill.”
Allen served as commandant of the Coast Guard for four years before leaving that position in May. He retired from the service in June, but he has remained the Obama administration’s point man on what has become the worst oil spill in U.S. history. In 2005, as Coast Guard chief of staff, he led the George W. Bush administration’s response to Hurricane Katrina, and in 2001, as the Coast Guard’s Atlantic area commander, he directed the agency’s response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The Awards Dinner is to be held at The Lighthouse on Chelsea Pier 61. SIA, ESA and CSAA will honor Leo Guthart of Topspin Partners and Cecil Hogan of Security Consultants, Inc. with the George R. Lippert Memorial Award and the Triton Award, respectively, for their achievements in and contributions to the security industry.
