The International Foundation for Sonography Education and Research (IFSER) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to global sonography education for all levels of sonography users. Sonography is a mobile affordable diagnostic tool and is available to the lone physician practicing in a small city in Vietnam or in a city in the United States. That physician/sonographer has the equipment but no one to provide education and share questions and images. IFSER is dedicated to providing educational products and services for sonography professionals and non-traditional users to ensure quality of care for all patients regardless of the size or accessibility of their medical facility. Our board of directors are experienced professionals dedicated to creating educational products and services for the global sonography community.

The International Foundation for Education and Research (IFSER) is dedicated to improving access to quality education and information for the global sonographic community through grant programs and educational products. IFSER makes a positive contribution to the global sonographic community by offering assistance to all who practice the science of ultrasound worldwide or who are engaged in ultrasound research, we can elevate the profession and advance the practice of this valuable medical technology to all in need.

In 1999, Don Milburn, who was then with Diasonics, had what was a radical idea at the time. Diasonics would donate $500 from each machine sold to a scholarship fund to be awarded to sonography students. It was a collaboration of educators, commercial representatives and clinical sonographers who met and created the first ever foundation of its kind.

Now, more than 20 years later, the same core group of people have a bigger vision. We believe that by working together with the many varied organizations, both non-profit and commercial, all of us can have a greater impact on sonography around the world. The best way to accomplish this is to set up a completely separate non-profit organization which has no ties to any association, organization or commercial entity. The organization is called the International Foundation for Sonography Education and Research. (IFSFR) It has its own Board of Directors and dedicated staff.

Since its inception the organization has given over $500,000 in scholarship assistance, developed educational products, sponsored 7 professional awards and distributed more than $100,000 in grants. The breadth of its work has affected many in the sonography community.
