Rahway, NJ (PRWEB) September 21, 2010
September is National Preparedness Month (NPM). Are you prepared?
“It’s hard to prepare for the unknown but it is vital for everyone to have a plan for what to do in case of an emergency,” states Christine Cederquist, owner of Survival Gear Source, LLC and an emergency preparedness expert. “The ability to survive the first 72 hours of any emergency situation or major disaster is crucial.”
NPM is sponsored by the Ready Campaign in partnership with Citizen Corps and the Ad Council. NPM is designed to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, and communities.
“Much like Day Light Savings time reminds us to change our smoke detector batteries, September should strike a chord for us to practice preparedness plans,” explains Cederquist. “It’s a fact, being prepared for an emergency saves lives.”
· Make sure you have a family emergency plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to plan in advance. Determine how you will contact one another, where you will regroup, and how you will respond in different scenarios.
· Develop a business continuity plan that accounts for all hazards (both natural and man-made disasters). Plan in advance how to manage any emergency situation. Assess the situation, use common sense, and ensure that you have the necessary resources to take care of employees and your organization.
· Inform people before, during, and after the emergency. Communication is key to educate everyone about what to do in case of an emergency, how it is being handled, and what worked as well as what didn’t.
“We are often told what to do in case of an emergency situation,” notes Cederquist. “If you fly, the flight attendants tell you how to prepare in case of an emergency; when you stay in a hotel, there is an exit plan posted on your room door; at work, companies and organizations often have systems in place to keep people informed. However, National Preparedness Month is a time for all of us to take stock and prepare as best we can for the unanticipated.”
