Pearson Collaborates With High Schools to Ensure Nontraditional Courses Meet New NCAA Policy for Division I Athletes

NovaNET Online Courseware Offers Student-Athletes Opportunity to Learn Online While Meeting Eligibility Requirements for College Sports

To assist schools in meeting the NCAA's recently announced changes to its policy regarding nontraditional course credits for Division I athletes, Pearson today launched an education initiative to ensure that schools deliver NovaNET to future college athletes through a program that meets these new rules. The schools around the country that have adopted the online courseware now have access to a free Webinar, featured on, that walks school leaders through the NCAA policy changes and explains recommended implementation strategies for student-athletes completing courses with NovaNET.

When implemented in a way that addresses the new NCAA requirements, NovaNET gives schools a comprehensive, online courseware system that will allow their student-athletes to earn high school credit online, while ensuring that their eligibility to participate in college sports is not jeopardized.

For example, the NCAA now requires students taking nontraditional courses to complete all instructional content, meeting the same objectives covered in a traditional course. NovaNET is available to schools in two formats: prescriptive and non-prescriptive. Pearson recommends that schools choose the non-prescriptive model - which requires the student to complete all of the course lessons and modules before taking a mastery test - when enrolling student-athletes in courses.

In addition, under the new NCAA rules, a highly qualified teacher must lead and oversee students taking a nontraditional course. This means the teacher approves the course curriculum, provides all instructional assistance and gives the students their final grades. Students have access to the teacher throughout the duration of the course, interacting through email, face-to-face feedback and opportunities for individualized instruction. Pearson's recommended implementation plan for NovaNET has always emphasized that students are most successful when taking the courses under the guidance, direction and supervision of a qualified teacher.

The new rules apply to courses completed on or after Aug. 1, 2010, for students entering an NCAA Division I college or university on or after that date.
