Martin Ranch Winery Harvests “Precious Medals” in 2010

After amassing an impressive lineup of nearly 50 awards and high rankings since January of this year, Martin Ranch Winery recently tipped the “precious medals” scales in the Santa Cruz Mountains Commercial Wine Competition with a formidable showing of 15 additional medals that included two Double Golds and a Best of Show Gold to add to its collection of 2010 accolades. Such an accomplishment in eight months is significant — but what’s even more striking is how the wines of Martin Ranch have reached this distinguished level of acclaim in just a few short years.

Owners and winemakers Thérèse and Dan Martin are not a typical married working couple. They don’t commute to work, don’t have desk jobs, and don’t get much time off. And they’re not dealing with college tuitions. But what they do have is a demanding yet fulfilling full-time shared career that requires a daily dawn-to-dusk regimen that might typically begin with a bumpy ride in an ATV, followed by a rigorous day of managing the crew in the vineyard and overseeing the sundry activities in the winery, and ending with the final punch-down for the day in the fermentation room during crush.

And the Martins’ “offspring?” They’re the carefully tended vines of the estate vineyard, the meticulously stacked and labeled barrels and the recently bottled and packed cases of wine stacked on palettes and waiting to be moved to the warehouse to make room for another award-winning vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Syrah, Grenache, Malbec or Sauvignon Blanc. And instead of receiving honors at school, the Martins’ “children” have instead been estowed some of the highest honors awarded by a wide range of national wine professionals and media. These “children” really do make their parents very proud.

Since receiving their first Double Gold for their Cabernet Franc a few years ago, the Martins have steadily honed their winemaking style and technique with a philosophy that incorporates the three key elements represented in the winery’s slogan: “Tradition, Passion, Excellence.” Tradition, exhibited by family farming practices that reach back more than one hundred years; passion for the art of growing wine grapes and making wine that’s readily visible whenever meeting Thérèse and Dan in-person; and excellence displayed in every glass of Martin Ranch wine poured. It’s this combination of farming, spirit and talent that makes Thérèse Vineyards and J.D. Hurley wines unique.

Top Honors The “Kids” Brought Home
The merits of the Martins’ hard work in developing an impressive collection of very drinkable wines have shown brightly for Martin Ranch in 2010. The Martin’s wines have been recognized with gold and silver medals by a number of highly regarded wine competitions and have received high rankings and favorable reviews from wine media that include: The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, California State Fair, San Francisco International Wine Competition, West Coast Wine Competition, Orange County Commercial Wine Competition, Wine Enthusiast Magazine and Wine & Spirits Magazine.

And most recently, the judges at the Santa Cruz Mountains Commercial Wine Competition agreed that in addition to awarding 12 other Martin Ranch wines their own medals, three Martin Ranch wines in particular deserved even more than just gold — a Double Gold for the Martin Ranch Thérèse Vineyards 2006 Sangiovese and 2008 Malbec, both made from fruit grown in the Santa Clara Valley, and a Best of Show Gold for the Martin Ranch Thérèse Vineyards 2007 Syrah, made from grapes harvested at the renowned Lester Family Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

All tallied to-date for this year, it’s a stellar showing of 54 “precious medals” for a modestly-sized winery at the southern tip of the Santa Cruz Mountains named Martin Ranch.
