Local Wellness Center Grows Despite Present Economy, Expands Services and Practice Space

When owners, Ray and Jean Kadkhodaian opened the doors to The Lighthouse, their primary goal was to provide a holistic approach to achieving emotional wellness. Now, eight years later, they have done just that, as they open doors to a new and complete emotional wellness center in Arlington Heights.

“The purpose of creating this center originally was not only to renovate marriage counseling, but to also transform overall emotional and mental healthcare as we know it,” Kadkhodaian said.

Mental healthcare has come a long way from the days characterized by the movie, “One Flew Over the Cukoo’s Nest”, however the progression has moved towards behavioral healthcare and the use of psychotropic medications for treatment. The Kadkhodaian’s believe that medications can be helpful tools in the process of change, but they only address a part of the issue. It is their belief that some people fear becoming dependent on medications while others believe that they can find happiness in a pill alone.

“Using medications as a temporary bridge during the therapeutic process helps people make life changes in a more comfortable way.” Kadkhodaian says, “When people change the way they think, communicate and live their lives, they not only find emotional balance, but it also changes their brain chemistry reducing their chances of needing life-long medication therapy.”

With the focus on overall wellness on the rise within the medical community, the mental health community has yet to catch up with the trend towards alternative and complementary medicine. One wellness center, The Lighthouse, provides consumers and the field of emotional and mental health a way to redefine and expand the breadth of their impact on health and to break the limiting stereotype surrounding the field.

The Open House celebrating their new location is scheduled for October 1, 2010, and members of the public are invited.
