The Coalition for Leadership in Aging Services (CLAS) offers a national certification program, CASP, for professionals in the aging services industry. The advanced courses are instructed by a team of nationally recognized experts, including John zumBrunnen, President and Founder of zumBrunnen, Inc.

John zumBrunnen, Founder and President of zumBrunnen, Inc., served as a faculty member at the Certified Aging Services Professional (CASP) training program offered through the Coalition for Leadership in Aging Services (CLAS) at the University of North Texas (UNT) from September 13-16, 2010. zumBrunnen instructed executive level candidates on the topic of Asset Management of Real Property (as one of the modules under Core Course III).

zumBrunnen's session focused on the management process to preserve real property assets including buildings, grounds, furnishing and equipment. zumBrunnen explained how asset management tools are used to manage risk associated with the physical plant. He discussed strategic planning and budgeting and used case studies to illustrate the importance of proper facility assessment, long-term capital replacement planning and reserve funding. Participants learned how to identify and develop primary asset management programs (including LEED programs), to lower operating expenses and preserve and protect real property. zumBrunnen also explained the importance of physical maintenance including integrating computer maintenance management program software (CMMS) to assure preventative maintenance (PM) programs are implemented.

zumBrunnen serves as an ongoing instructor, and he has been involved in teaching CASP (formerly RHP) coursework for the past eight years. He also helped in the recent redevelopment of the CASP program by authoring the Core Course III Module 13 "Asset Management." zumBrunnen has over four decades of experience, and is a respected expert, consulting in the senior living field. He established his building consulting firm in 1989, and he is also the inventor of the FacilityForecast® software system. In addition to serving as a faculty member for CLAS, he is also a member of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) and various state chapters, American Senior Housing Association (ASHA), Community Association Institute (CAI) and the Association of Professional Reserve Analysts (APRA).

About CLAS and CASP:

For 24 years, the Coalition for Leadership in Aging Services (CLAS) has offered high-quality education to professionals in the aging services industry. Currently administered by the University of North Texas (UNT), CLAS provides a forum where professional education is delivered by industry experts. The Certified Aging Services Professional (CASP) National Certification Program is the foundation of the professional activities offered by CLAS.

The Certified Aging Services Professional (CASP) National Certification Program brings a level of professional recognition both to the individuals who have achieved the designations and to the organizations that support them. The CASP Program has recruited highly qualified national leaders in the field of senior living and aging services to write three new state-of-the-art training manuals for use with CASP certification candidates beginning in spring 2010.

The Core Courses are divided into three areas, with seven topics being covered under each category (for a total of 21 sections). The Core Courses focus on: 1) Administering the Senior Living Community; 2) Management and the Aging Resident, and 3) Managing the Financial and Physical Environments.

To obtain CASP certification, interested candidates must submit an application, successfully complete the three CASP Core Courses and pass the required examinations within two years.
