The Save Our Waters Foundation is committed to educating consumers, and recommends these tips for conservation:

1. Use slow-release fertilizers on lawns and flowerbeds. These limit the amount of nitrates that penetrate the water table, the source of our drinking water.
2. Water lawns at night, when about half as much water is needed, since it’s cooler then and the daytime heat won’t cause the water to evaporate before it gets to the roots.
3. Use water-saving shower heads in bathrooms.
4. Put a brick in your toilet tank to significantly reduce the amount of water used for every flush without affecting the workings of your toilet.
5. If you're a recreational fisherman, practice “catch and release” to ensure that fish populations remain sustainable.
6. Never pour oil, paint, or household cleaners into the ground.
7. Be conscious of the amount of non-recyclable garbage you create, and make less, if possible. Landfills create seepage that gets into the water table.
8. Use rechargeable batteries.
9. Pick up litter. Most litter in creeks, ponds or canals wasn't thrown into the water, nearly all of it migrated there.
10. Get involved, volunteer. Contribute. Learn. Buy a raffle ticket!
