Digital channels, such as online advertising, blog posts and social networking are fast catching word of mouth as the most reliable and effective source of recruitment leads, according to Search, Social Media and PR Company, Punch Communications.
Although word of mouth remains an extremely strong gauge of a candidate's suitability, as it is typically based on a prior personal or private relationship with an already trusted team member, the breadth and reach of digital channels are starting to outweigh the traditional approach.
Sites such as LinkedIn.com offer superb and cost effective means of reaching an extended and relevant online audience, not least because a LinkedIn advert enables the user to activate his or her own social network - and indeed that of the user's contacts too if sufficiently interesting.
Similarly, posting to a blog and then disseminating via other means, whether by email or again, social media, enables the recruiter to treat the post as a focal point - or social object - around which online audiences can gravitate.
Obviously job message boards and job advertising can spread the search wider, albeit at a cost, which can vary from virtually zero to a significant spend depending on the site or network used.
Pete Goold, Managing Director of Punch, which is currently hiring for several PR jobs, including senior Account Managers and Account Director in both London and the Midlands, commented:
"Gone are the days when recruitment ads simply meant placing an expensive quarter page in a trade or national title as a means of complementing the word of mouth approach through both the employer and the employee's extended network. Clearly the typical individual that comes through a trusted source is much more likely to be a successful candidate - but the point is that the online approach simply yields a far greater volume, and is extremely cost effective."
