WLAN Providing Connectivity to Staff, Patients, Students, and Police

We also wanted to give guest access to patients, as well as university students studying at the hospital. Aerohive’s technology enables us to support such a diverse group of users, without impacting network performance.

Aerohive Networks, creators of the award-winning cooperative control wireless LAN (WLAN) architecture, today announced that Antwerp University Hospital, one of Belgium’s leading hospitals providing care to over 180,000 patients per year has deployed Aerohive’s controller-less WLAN infrastructure, to provide staff, patients, and students, with secure and reliable connectivity. The WLAN is enabling the hospital to mobilize busy healthcare professionals, and support future projects such as assets tracking and Voice over WLAN. The project was managed and implemented by Aerohive’s partner Nextel.

Aerohive's cooperative control HiveAPs require no network controllers or overlay networks. Instead, software in the HiveAPs enables them to self-organize into groups called Hives. The result is a secure multi-service WLAN infrastructure able to support a vast array of wireless devices, application types and service levels, with faster client performance, wire-like resilience and lower capital and operational costs.

Wolfgang Wauters, ICT infrastructure manager at Antwerp University Hospital, explains why he chose Aerohive; “Following the hospital’s recent expansion, our incumbent Cisco WLAN was unable to cost-effectively scale or deliver the performance required for our wireless ambitions. We reviewed a number of vendors including Aruba, Meru, Motorola and Ruckus, but chose to implement Aerohive because of its ability to scale and provide the resilience to support multiple user groups on the network.

“For example, anywhere, anytime connectivity throughout the hospital is vital for providing staff with access to bedside medical applications such as Qcare, Metavision, PDMS and C2M. We also wanted to give guest access to patients, as well as university students studying at the hospital. Aerohive’s technology enables us to support such a diverse group of users, without impacting network performance.”

Despite the number of users, Wauters has seen a significant reduction in network management; “Aerohive’s controller-less architecture allows us to very quickly scale the network; for example, adding APs can be done in two clicks and requires little technical intervention. Furthermore, by allowing us to supervise the entire network from one location, the HiveManager platform has dramatically reduced our management overheads. This enables us to save time and money that can be injected into other projects such as Voice over WLAN and assets tracking.”
