Cappex.com, a comprehensive college search and scholarship portal, is proud to announce the winner of the 2010 Cappex and United Negro College Fund (UNCF) “Perfect College Fit” Scholarship. Jamal Thorne of Brooklyn, N.Y., is the 2010 recipient of the $5,000 award, and will be attending Morehouse College in the fall.

“Winning this scholarship has given me a feeling of optimism,” Thorne said. “The Cappex Perfect College Fit Scholarship has made it possible for my journey to start. It has also made it possible for me to go to college and hopefully give my contribution back to society.”

The "Perfect College Fit’’ Scholarship invited high school seniors who are considering UNCF schools to submit an essay on why a specific UNCF school was the perfect fit for them. The scholarship was awarded to the student with the combination of outstanding high school achievement and winning essay.

Jamal’s essay stressed the importance he placed on leadership and how the mission of Morehouse was to produce morally conscious leaders for the conditions and issues of today.

Mr. Thorne is a recent graduate of Science Skills Center High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., and intends on majoring in biomedical sciences. Jamal is involved in a variety of volunteer activities including the NYCares park clean-up program and the Harlem Children’s Society. In addition to volunteering, Jamal helped conduct a research project at the Columbia University fMRI Center, and part of his research was published in a scientific journal. That experience furthered his interest in neurology and computer science.

“Cappex is proud to partner with the United Negro College Fund to provide this scholarship,” said Chris Long, president of Cappex.com. “We were impressed by Jamal’s achievements and are committed to giving back to the community and helping students connect with their ideal college.”
