Bausum & Duckett Electric Co., a full-service residential and commercial electrical contractor serving the DelMarVa region, is celebrating its 50th anniversary--no small feat in a struggling economy that has seen many contractors shut their doors.

Bausum & Duckett's longevity and strong reputation are a result of its steadfast commitment to exceptional service, according to Vice President, Mark Llewellyn. "We're here and still successful because we're dedicated to serving our customers and our communities. We're committed to providing the best service possible -- no matter how big or small the job-- and this means staying on top of changing technology and trends so we meet our customers' needs."

The Beginning
Founded in 1960 in Edgewater, MD by Harold Bausum and James Duckett, Bausum & Duckett Electric Co. specialized in small residential electrical repairs. The company quickly grew, expanding its service offerings to include larger residential projects, commercial work and emergency services. When Duckett left the company, Bausum carried on, growing it from a small mom and pop business to a larger full-service organization.

In 1973, a second office was opened in order to serve customers in the entire DelMarVa region. Harold Bausum remained at the helm of Bausum & Duckett until 1983, when four additional owners came aboard, one of which was Tim Holt who became the sole owner in 2003.

As Bausum & Duckett continued to expand its service offerings, creating specialized Solar, Service, Residential, Commercial, and ElectriCare divisions, it took on bigger and more complex projects. Along with residential projects throughout the metro Washington/Baltimore, Northern Virginia, and DelMarVa region, noted Maryland commercial projects include various area schools, NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, the Purdue Industries Plant in Salisbury, Asbury United Methodist Retirement Village in Rockville and Solomon's, and Park Place in Annapolis--to name just a few.

Today--Grounded in Traditional Values
Today, Bausum & Duckett remains true to its roots. "No matter what we do, we take care of our customers--big or small, commercial or residential. It's always been about building relationships, trust, being comfortable who you're dealing with, servicing the customers, making sure they're happy with the end product, and giving them a quality job for a fair price," said Mr. Holt. "And thanks to a seasoned management team and our dedicated employees we've been able make this happen--again and again."

The company now serves the entire DelMarVa region with 100 employees, a fleet of service vehicles and a full menu of electrical services--from systems design and construction to repairs and installations--for both commercial and residential customers.

Throughout Bausum & Duckett's 50-year history, commitment to the community has always been a top priority. Employee volunteerism, fundraising efforts, and sponsorships and corporate donations are just a few of the ways the firm gives back. Bausum & Duckett is particularly proud of its ongoing partnerships with Arundel Habitat for Humanity, Hospice, Main Street Gym, and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, and its recent participation in a Build Brigade sponsored by Homes for Our Troops.

Wired for Tomorrow
One of the company's priorities is to be at the forefront of changing technologies and industry trends--offering the latest information, advancements, and products to customers. If Bausum & Duckett sees a need, the company will find a way to fulfill it. Its expansion to the Eastern Shore to fill a gap in service resources was an example of this. Its focus on attaining "green" certifications and providing "green" products and services is another. And, the company's new ElectriCare program, an in-depth preventative maintenance and electrical efficiency inspection, is the most recent example of Bausum & Duckett's dedication to serving customer needs and growing its business through innovative solutions.

"This economy doesn't make life easy for anyone. We've seen many ups and downs over the last 50 years but we're still here. We're confident that our commitment to exceptional service and our willingness to advance with technology position us for continued growth over the next 50 years," said Mr. Holt.
