"Our career and college readiness tools have been pioneers in their own right, and many of the efforts we planned under REACH FARTHER 2020 will use them in very innovative ways to advance the 2020 goals," said J. Michael Thompson, XAP's CEO.
Culver City, CA (PRWEB) September 30, 2010
XAP Corporation has announced REACH FARTHER 2020 in support of the Obama Administration’s education goal of leading the world in the highest proportion of college-educated adults by 2020. The XAP program will leverage the company’s unique position as a leader in both K-12 and post-secondary career and college readiness tools in helping schools, districts, post-secondary institutions, and businesses reach for the Administration’s goal for 2020.
“The Administration has called for an all-hands-on-deck approach by education leaders, parents, student and the public and private sector to help raise college-going and graduation rates in our community colleges and four-year colleges and universities,” said J. Michael Thompson, XAP’s CEO. “At XAP, we have taken this as a rallying cry. The sea change that is necessary to achieve the 2020 objective can only be possible if we put the student at the center of the process. REACH FARTHER 2020 is an umbrella for a number of initiatives that XAP is leading the way in its work and in collaboration with other companies in order to make a significant difference in the lives of people throughout the various stages of life,” added Thompson.
According to White House and U.S. Department of Education reports, regaining number one status by 2020 will require college completion rates to increase from a current 40 percent to 60 percent. This will mean providing college pathways to an additional 11 million students to enter and graduate from America’s colleges and universities, beyond the 17 million who have a college degree today.
“Arming students with the tools that enable them to assemble career interests and goals, match themselves to an educational plan, and then navigate their way to reaching their goal is at the heart of building the 11 million additional college pathways defined by the Department of Education,” added Mr. Thompson. “This has always been at the heart of what XAP does. Our career and college readiness tools have been pioneers in their own right, and many of the efforts we planned under REACH FARTHER 2020 will use them in very innovative ways to advance the 2020 goals,” he added.
In an address to an historic joint annual meeting of the State Higher Education Executive Officers and the Council of Chief State School Officers in July, Education Secretary Arne Duncan summed up the educational challenge for attendees this way: “…..the implications of these large increases in educational productivity are unmistakable. K-12 schools, especially high schools will have to be transformed from institutions that concentrate primarily on getting students a diploma, to institutions that are all about preparing students for careers and college- and without the need for remediation.”
“The shift in emphasis from a high school diploma to career and college readiness will require getting students to consider personal skills, interests, college and career opportunities much more early in the K-12 system than in the senior year in high school,” said Judy Chappelear, XAP Vice President of Solutions. “We have a number of clients who are already using our tools in very innovative ways to meet these objectives and evaluate the program successes,” she added. “REACH FARTHER 2020 is our framework for thinking creatively about how our solutions can advance the 2020 education goals. We are building several strategic partnerships in both the public and private sector that can add more value for the student by making it easier for them, expanding their range of opportunities, or bringing them more relevant information for their post-secondary experience.”
In launching the initiative, XAP will be attending several industry conferences through the end of 2010, including National Association of College Admissions Counseling, National College Access Network, Post-Secondary Electronic Standards Council, and Association of Career and Technical Education. Company representatives will be available at each to discuss REACH FARTHER 2020.
