Schafer began his career with Hyatt more than 25 years ago and has since served in ten different cities. He has hosted presidents, political dignitaries, heads of state, international delegations, and the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Schafer has been on the opening team of seven different Hyatt properties, and in 1997 and again in 2007, was awarded the distinctive honor of General Manager of the Year for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts.

Schafer graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Hotel Administration. With a strong commitment to charitable and civic organizations, he has served on numerous tourism, hospitality, and charity boards. Schafer and his wife Sue are the proud parents of four children.
