It doesn’t matter what you want to be great at. It’s not easy to strive for greatness in any area,” said John Danowski, head coach of Duke University men's lacrosse team. “If it was easy everyone would do it – and then it wouldn’t be great.”
Durham, NC (PRWEB) October 14, 2010
John Danowski, head coach of the Duke University men’s lacrosse team, spoke to members of the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin about how to build a winning team.
Since 2006, Danowski has lead the team to four of the most successful lacrosse seasons in Duke University history. This includes an impressive 66-13 record in leading the Blue Devils to three ACC regular season and tournament titles, four appearances in the national semifinals, two in the NCAA title match and ultimately taking the 2010 national title in a 6-5 overtime victory over Notre Dame in 2010.
Danowski is equally proud of the team’s improved reputation as scholar-athletes and community servants. Most of the team members maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average and the team provides hundreds of hours of community service a year.
Danowski’s speech to the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin focused on how to create a winning team despite challenges. One of the key points in his speech was that excellence arises when people embrace challenges and travel outside their comfort zones.
“It doesn’t matter what you want to be great at. It’s not easy to strive for greatness in any area,” he said. “If it was easy everyone would do it – and then it wouldn’t be great.”
To Danowski, embracing challenges does not mean being a lone ranger. Rather people must learn to ask questions and seek help. In a team atmosphere, it means communicating with others and understanding that team concerns must outweigh individual ones.
Above all, it means discarding excuses, accepting occasional failures and embracing excellence in all you do.
The Law Offices of James Scott Farrin regularly brings in guest speakers from a variety of backgrounds and professions to speak to staff about leadership, quality, overcoming hardship, achieving excellence and other matters.
