“Pisane is an excellent protein source for foods or supplements that meet the needs of individuals who partake in endurance and strength exercise”

According to A&B Ingredients, market analyst reports show continued growth in sports nutrition products, are far outpacing overall food and drinks spending. In fact, Nutrition Business Journal the sports nutrition and weight-loss category is one of the fastest growing food and beverage categories, now standing at over $2.7 billion in sales for 2008. NMI’s 2009 Health & Wellness Trends Database reported 22 percent of consumers indicated they use sports nutrition. And, Mintel points out that the sports and energy drink segment gained 164 percent in sales during 2002 to 2007, due in large part to the launch of numerous line extensions in the sports drinks sub-segment.
“The nutritional products category is no longer geared toward athletes alone, but rather reaching out to a broader audience to include individuals who lead a more active lifestyle. The message is clear, consumers have clearly made their choice -- living a healthy, active lifestyle is a priority,” said Gil Bakal, A&B Ingredients’ Managing Director.
Bakal notes that a proper diet in exercise and physical performance is essential. “We know that carbohydrates are a major energy source while proteins are critical nutrients for muscle protein synthesis. And overall protein needs are higher for people who exercise regularly,” he says.
To aid in the diet process, A&B Ingredients’ pea protein -- “Pisane -- is specifically designed for use as a single protein source for sport foods and is an extremely viable alternative protein source containing high levels of or branched chain amino acids – leucine, isoleucine, valine – arginine and lysine.
Pisane is a non-genetically modified (GMO) pea protein isolate that has excellent digestibility -- 98% -- and a well-balanced amino acid profile. Manufactured by Cosucra, Pisane contains 88% to 90% protein. It is both gluten free and exhibits low incidents of allergens.
“It is an excellent protein source for foods or supplements that meet the needs of individuals who partake in endurance and strength exercise,” says Bakal. He further notes “Overall protein needs are greater for people who exercise regularly. The level of branched chain amino acids in Pisane pea protein is higher than other vegetable proteins and is comparable to those found in milk and egg protein. This is particular important in sport foods because they allow the maintenance of muscle tissue during intense exercise.”
Pisane’s arginine content is the highest of all commercially available proteins and contributes to enhanced immune responses. The lysine content of pea protein helps with the building of muscle protein and which is required for growth and bone development.
Another plus for Pisane, notes the manufacturer, is the ever-growing move toward all-natural, clean-label ingredients. Pea protein has proven to be one of the most tolerated and accepted protein sources without labeling or high allergy issues.
Other benefits of Pisane include:
- Low levels of anti-nutritional factors
- Kosher and Halal certified
