Readers Desire Books That Last Forever

Passionate readers are aware of the downgrade in paper quality within their purchased books and prefer long lasting, permanent paper. The Permanence Matters initiative by Glatfelter has created an online home for this growing and vocal movement to discuss issues and share concerns and experiences.

Passionate readers, not surprisingly, are passionate about the quality of their books. As a result of thousands of conversations with these people, it has become apparent that readers are extremely aware of the quality of their purchased books and prefer books printed on lasting, permanent paper. While many publishers have turned to printing on groundwood paper as a means to cut production costs, book consumers are noticing the difference and are starting to become vocal about their displeasure with the lower quality paper. They value the opportunity to have books that will last forever.

Aware of this strong desire from the book-purchasing population to have lasting hard-cover books, the Permanence Matters initiative from Glatfelter has created an online home for this growing and vocal movement, allowing the public a platform to discuss the issues at hand, and share their concerns and experiences.

“We knew there were people in the reader community who cared about the degradation of pages within their books,” says Melissa Klug, the resident paper expert of Permanence Matters, and a voracious reader in her own right. “What we did not know was how wide the passion ran. When we launched the Facebook page in June 2010, we thought we might get a few hundred people sharing their concern. We now boast over 20,000 passionate readers sharing their concern about the paper quality of their books, and we continue to grow at a rate of over 70 book purchasers each and every day. Amazing!”

Based on the information shared by the concerned readers, it is apparent that they appreciate the physical aspects of a printed book – its texture, its binding, the weight of the pages, the thickness of the tome. They treasure the permanence of a printed book, its importance as a family heirloom. The quality of the paper on which a book is printed is a crucial component in ensuring the permanence of a book and its ability to stand the test of time. Further, better quality paper will preserve the long-standing generational sharing of books for years to come. The growing movement behind the quest for better quality paper does not seem to be abating any time soon.
