Classroom teachers' daily challenge to address the diverse learning needs of every student coupled with the increasing pressure for accountability have even the most experienced teachers searching for deeper insight into why a child is struggling and proven approaches in how to bridge their gaps in learning.

In schools across the nation, it's not unusual today to find 30 or more students in a classroom, leaving minimal time to evaluate each child's needs and apply the right resources to individualize learning and ensure that every student is on track to meet learning goals. To help educators around the country face these challenges and ensure student success, Pearson today released the white paper Response to Intervention: Meeting the Personalized Learning Needs of All Students.

Pearson's issue paper focuses on current Response to Intervention (RTI) practices and strategies. According to research highlighted in the issue brief, successful implementation of RTI requires three essential components: multiple tiers of intervention, data-based decisions, and an integrated data and assessment system. The paper outlines five key elements needed to create a successful RTI service delivery system: leadership, fidelity of implementation, parental involvement, an administration-endorsed assessment system, and ongoing professional development.

In the RTI model, problems are identified as early as possible, student progress is monitored with data, and appropriate instructional strategies are applied to keep students on track. The National Center on Response to Intervention defines RTI as a framework that integrates assessment and instruction within "a multi-level prevention system" to apply scientifically-based approaches that reduce behavior problems and help struggling learners maximize their achievement.

Policymakers, educators and parents are looking to RTI to support the unique learning styles of all students and help them achieve positive academic outcomes in today's tough academic climate. The Obama Administration has highlighted RTI as a key element in ensuring today's students succeed by funding RTI initiatives with federal funds and stimulus dollars.
