Games and Simulations Upgrade Virtual 3D Clouds, Weather, and Skies with SilverLining 2.0

Sundog Software brings realistic clouds, skies, weather, and lighting to simulators and video games around the world. Version 2.0 of SilverLining, its real-time software for weather effects, was released today with some major technology upgrades.

A small company in the suburbs of Seattle with some very big clients is keeping the skies and weather in your flight simulators, video games, and TV weather reports as realistic as possible. With the release of its latest software package, SilverLining 2.0, Sundog Software is applying the latest technology in real-time computer graphics to creating virtual skies and 3D clouds for simulation and game companies around the world.

"This new release of SilverLining really takes advantage of what modern consumer-grade computer video cards can do," says Frank Kane, owner of Sundog Software. "We introduce a technique called GPU ray-casting for 3D volumetric clouds that makes really dense cloud layers possible. With SilverLining, software developers can add the widest variety of cloud types and weather conditions to their simulators and games easily and with full physical reality."

SilverLining automatically creates skies for any given time, location, and weather conditions. It conducts real physical simulations of how light passes through the clouds and atmosphere, leading to dramatic lighting at sunrise and sunset and smooth transitions from day to night. SilverLining provides a wide variety of cloud types that are three-dimensional and can be flown through, and also creates weather effects for rain, sleet, and snow.

Sundog's SilverLining package is known as "middleware" in the software industry; it is a technology component that developers purchase and integrate into their own simulations and games. Sundog offers code and support for integrating with several popular simulation and game engines, including OpenSceneGraph, Ogre3D, Gamebryo Lightspeed, SceniX, and Carmenta, or may be integrated into custom systems on a variety of platforms including OpenGL and DirectX on Windows, Linux, or MacOS.
