Employers have a duty of care to ensure that the workplace is safe

National Accident Helpline is calling for greater awareness of back injuries, as musculoskeletal problems are the most common reason for absences from work in the UK.

Back Care Awareness Week (11th – 15th October) aims to highlight damage that can be caused to backs when lifting, moving or shifting, whether at home, work, or leisure.

More than 8,000 people a year call National Accident Helpline with back injuries. An average of 3,000 of these injuries each year are work-related and caused by, among others, slips and trips, bad handling procedures or inappropriate equipment.

Beth Powell, consumer director of National Accident Helpline, said: “Employers have a duty of care to ensure that the workplace is safe and provide the correct equipment and training.

The back is a complex structure, involving bones, nerves, ligaments, muscles and other tissues. Any or all of these could be affected by a back injury. A person may look and feel well in other respects, but be affected by a back injury that could cause them short term discomfort or even require surgery and long term care.”
