The Center for Hospitality Research, affiliated with the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, has recently announced the findings of a study that determined face-to-face meetings are more advantageous for business outcomes than using virtual meeting technology in most cases.

Cornell University School of Hotel Administration's Center for Hospitality Research recently conducted a study that examined the future of business meetings, conferences, and other networking events. The study found that face-to-face meetings, and not the newest virtual meeting technologies, are the most advantageous for most business outcomes. It was concluded that face-to-face meetings were better able to 1) capture participant attention, 2) inspire a positive emotional climate and catalyze collaboration, and 3) build human networks and relationships. Rick W Breckbill, owner of Severn Lodge (, a well-known Muskoka, Ontario resort with meeting and conference facilities, states "these findings are exciting those of us who are in the business of providing meeting and conference facilities. It confirms what many of our meeting coordinators and delegates have told us for years; that in-person meetings allow for a tangible, more personable business experience that simply cannot be recreated virtually."

The Center for Hospitality Research findings will help executives to better determine how they should proceed with the planning of large group meetings and events. While face-to-face meetings are typically more expensive than conference calls or other types of virtual meetings, many businesses they find face-to-face meetings to be well worth the investment in time and money depending on the purpose of the meeting. It has been found that for most business purposes, having a group meeting with everyone present in one place has the greatest impact in terms of both participant positivity and the endurance of the business message.

News of this study may have a very positive impact on hotels and conference resorts in Ontario, many of which have suffered from a decline in business as a result of the advent of virtual meeting and conference technology. This is especially true for Ontario conference resorts located in the traditional cottage country areas of the province, that are busy with vacationers during the summer months but rely on the conference business to fill their rooms off season.

Muskoka resort, Severn Lodge, has remained successful in attracting Ontario conference business over the years including corporate meetings, executive retreats, sales training conferences, and incentive trips. It has held on to its Ontario conference business by offering a viable and reasonably priced alternative to virtual meetings so close to the GTA. "We offer a wide range of services and can handle all of the details to ensure every meeting at Severn Lodge runs smoothly," states Breckbill. "We have a dedicated conference planner who is available to assist with and coordinate all the particulars. Our planner, along with our resort staff, are there to meet all the day to day needs throughout the conference, whether it's providing audio visual equipment, fax, word processing and internet services, or arranging for team building exercises, entertainment and recreational activities for delegates. We want to make certain that our corporate guests are able to maximize the benefits of their in-person meeting, as well as enjoy their stay in our beautiful Muskoka ~ Georgian Bay lake district."
