Naoki Shimoda, an expert in utilities and technology, was elected to the partnership of management consulting firm Strategic Decisions Group. He has led SDG's largest industry practice since 2008 and is vice president of strategy for the firm's new hydropower venture.

Management consulting firm Strategic Decisions Group (SDG) today announced it has elected the head of its Energy & Environment Practice, Naoki Shimoda, as a partner in the firm.

Mr. Shimoda has been a member of the management team since 2008, when he assumed the leadership of the firm's largest industry practice, serving clients in electric utilities, renewable energy, and oil & gas.

"Naoki has contributed greatly to client development in an industry that is undergoing tremendous change, particularly with regard to regulatory uncertainty and renewable resources," said Carl Spetzler, chairman and CEO. "We are pleased to recognize this milestone in his professional achievement and to welcome him to the partnership."

A native of Japan, Mr. Shimoda has worked extensively with US and Japanese utilities and with technology companies. His expertise at the intersection of technology and electric utilities makes him a valued strategic advisor to clients as they evaluate new technologies under various future scenarios for climate regulation, industry re-regulation, commodity prices, technology, and industry competition.

Mr. Shimoda played a significant role in developing SDG's business in Japan, establishing a joint venture consulting firm in Tokyo, Industrial Decisions Inc., that helped several energy utilities in Japan acquire the skills and establish the organizational design required for energy trading and marketing. Mr. Shimoda jointly led and managed the venture for four years until SDG's partner, Mizuho Securities Co., bought out SDG's interest in 2007.

In addition to his leadership of the Energy & Environment Practice, Mr. Shimoda will be vice president of strategy for SDG's newest venture, ORENCO Hydropower, founded this year to develop small hydropower projects at existing US dams.

Before joining SDG, Mr. Shimoda was a systems engineer at NTT Corp., where he designed integrated communication systems that handle voice, video, and computer communication data for public and private companies in Japan.

Mr. Shimoda received an MS in engineering-economic systems from Stanford University and a BS in electronics and telecommunication from Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. He is based in SDG's Palo Alto, Calif., office.

Mr. Shimoda resides in Palo Alto with his wife and two children.
