"Consumers are wary of new technologies, expecting set-up hassles that outweigh the benefits of the service. With mobile banking, the pool of early adopters is shrinking. The burden is now on banks to make mobile banking set-up clear and easy," said Steve Ellis, of the authors of the report.

Unclear instructions and lengthy set-up processes are common on many bank sites. Currently the money-center banks have the advantage. According to the research, Citibank and Bank of America make it easiest to get started with mobile banking. HSBC and SunTrust have the poorest experience for helping people get started with mobile banking.

Other web sites in the study include: BB&T, Chase, PNC, TD Bank, US Bank, and Wells Fargo.
