Fibrwrap Construction Strengthens New Federal Sector Building Elements to Meet Anti-Terrorism / Force Protection Requirements

The use of the lightweight, high-strength Tyfo® materials to add the AT/FP capacity required to new columns, beams and walls is a novel use of the products—and could potentially save government and private owners hundreds of millions of dollars over traditional construction methods.

Beginning with project work in the Mid-Atlantic U.S., Fibrwrap Construction, LP is pioneering the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) products to meet AT/FP requirements for new buildings and building additions. As the global leader in the development, testing and application of the Fyfe Company Tyfo® Fibrwrap® system, Fibrwrap is utilizing the project to advance the use of Fiber Wrap systems in both new construction and AT/FP scenarios.

While the exact details of the project will not be released, the benefits of utilizing the Fyfe Company Tyfo® Fibrwrap® system for building retrofit projects are well known within the federal and government sector engineering community. Specific to AT/FP requirements, the Tyfo® system is used to meet both progressive collapse and overpressure requirements.

For the Mid-Atlantic U.S. project, Fibrwrap chartered a test program in order to assess exact scenarios which could potentially take place in the new field structure. The test program took place in New Mexico and results showed clearly that the Tyfo® system met all AT/FP requirements. In a new construction environment where space is at a premium, the Tyfo® system can be added to concrete structural members to provide additional strength and load bearing capacity to meet AT/FP criteria.
