“McCarter puts a lot of time and energy into fostering a culture that values service by encouraging and supporting the participation of all attorneys and staff in our firm-wide Pro Bono Program; it is a priority.” said Michael P. Kelly of McCarter.

Law firm McCarter & English LLP has been named as the recipient of The Leadership Award by the Delaware State Bar Association for its pro bono service. The award will be presented at DSBA’s Christopher W. White 2010 Distinguished Access to Justice Awards Breakfast on Oct. 26 at 8:00 a.m. in the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington.

The firm’s Wilmington office is receiving the award because of its demonstrated outstanding leadership in providing pro bono representation to Delaware’s indigent community. Many of the office’s attorneys take pro bono cases from Delaware Volunteer Legal Services and the Office of the Child Advocate. During the firm’s 2010 fiscal year, lawyers in the Wilmington office logged over 100 pro bono hours per attorney -- more than double the amount of pro bono time that the American Bar Association recommends attorneys complete on an annual basis.

“McCarter puts a lot of time and energy into fostering a culture that values service by encouraging and supporting the participation of all attorneys and staff in our firm-wide Pro Bono Program; it is a priority.” said Michael P. Kelly, McCarter’s chairman, who is based in Wilmington and has been very actively involved in pro bono cases all of his career. “The Wilmington office has been a leader at the firm for setting a high record of service and is an example of our commitment to social change. I value this award more than any other.”

There are currently 40 active pro bono matters in the Wilmington office. Those cases include pro bono guardianship, custody, criminal and civil rights matters. The Wilmington office also recently launched a new project with Widener’s Veterans Law Clinic. Through that project, McCarter attorneys will be taking appeals of cases in which the Veterans Administration denied benefits claims.

In addition, the office has given financial support to agencies that provide legal services to Delaware’s indigent population, including donations to the Delaware Volunteer Legal Services Combined Campaign for Justice and DVLS’s First Pro Bono Celebration 5K Run/Walk.
