Mini-Apps in support of SAP solutions for developers and Basis teams provide free high-value system insight into custom objects and code via new SaaS platform

The Salt Apps for this initial release provide focused, up-to-the-minute insight into the custom code base and the objects in use or being developed by front-line project teams.

Revelation Software Concepts Pty Ltd (RSC), an SAP® software partner and creator of the widely used Rev-Trac® change control technology, today ended beta testing and released its initial collection of Salt Apps designed for use with SAP solutions. Salt, the new, free “Software as a Service” or SaaS application platform, powers and delivers a suite of highly useful “mini-apps” for developers, Basis and project team members who create custom applications or apply maintenance changes to their SAP software-based IT systems.

The initial release, announced at the SAP TechEd 2010 Las Vegas conference, includes six small utility apps focused on Change Intelligence for the Project Team. Their quirky names describe what they do, from the Version Vault object repository to Cold Case, which identifies custom objects and custom code abandoned in the system.

“We had a tremendous response from the SAP community when we launched the Salt beta test earlier this year,” said David Drake, RSC CEO and CTO. “The Salt Apps for this initial release provide focused, up-to-the-minute insight into the custom code base and the objects in use or being developed by front-line project teams. Going forward we’ll issue new Salt Apps on a regular basis, including the Watch Bot and Life Saver Apps scheduled for release Q1 2011.”

Reception of Salt during the beta test phase was so positive that, even with only Version Vault and Matrix available to demo at the 2010 SAUG (SAP Australian User Group) Demo Jam in Sydney in August, Salt Apps for use with SAP solutions took second place. The initial, complete set of six Apps will be featured in the Demo Jam taking place during SAP TechEd 2010 on October 19 at the Venetian. The initial set available now includes -

  •     Version Vault − Continuously collects and indexes versions of system objects
  •     Match Box − Shows differences between objects or versions of objects
  •     Matrix – Displays object differences across the systems
  •     WIP Window − Shows all work in progress (WIP) whether in development or finished but not yet moved to production
  •     Cold Case – Identifies code and objects forgotten, abandoned or simply left inactive
  •     Code Ferret − Conducts fast, "Google-like" searches of ABAP™ source code across all connected SAP systems

“We’ve released these free utilities to the SAP software-using community because small, free programs have been extremely helpful to earlier software systems like UNIX, and we wanted to show ABAP developers the utility of third-party software,” said Rick Porter, vice president of business development at RSC. “Purely from a business standpoint, they’re also a good way to introduce SAP software users to the high quality of the change control software products we develop.”

Commented Adam Cleversley, senior programmer at RSC, “It gets to be a challenge to see under the hood on large systems as they evolve. Over time, custom code is added, objects change, landscapes multiply and the systems themselves grow more interconnected and complex. These little Salt Apps help developers keep track of things much more easily and accurately.”

Beta testers at various global companies agreed with Cleversley −

  •     One team leader reported of a free Salt App, "Code Ferret is alone worth the price as far as the developers I was working with are concerned!"
  •     Impressed by the SALT GUI, a developer noted, “It was blazingly fast!”
  •     Asked which Salt Apps proved most immediately valuable, one developer replied, “Definitely, Code Ferret and Version Vault. The Matrix App holds a great deal of interest as well.”
  •     One developer tested Code Ferret against known and corrected coding errors prior to PRD deployment, and humorously reported, “Speed and effectiveness are startling. Very quickly searched the landscape for the sins of the programming team and caught them out again.”
  •     About Matrix, a QA team member said, “Amazingly fast. Very powerful way of discovering just how horrible and messy some of our code really was!”

The Salt platform runs as a plug-and-play virtual appliance, driving the small, useful Salt Apps. First previewed at the SAPPHIRE® NOW and ASUG Annual Conference in Orlando in May, Salt was released as a beta test open to users of SAP solutions in August, prior to its general release to users at SAP TechEd 2010 Las Vegas.

Salt supports up to three systems at no charge. Additional, fee-based subscriptions are available to support up to 20 systems. The new Salt service and apps are independent of RSC’s flagship Rev-Trac change control product, and Rev-Trac is not required.

Future Salt Apps will be announced on Twitter @SaltApps, through LinkedIn and via other Web-based channels to be announced. Current Salt Apps can be seen in action at the SaltApps Channel on YouTube,, where subscribing to the channel delivers notifications and demos of new Salt Apps as they become available.
