Owner of Sorrento Mesa Printing Wins Prestigious Title at 2010 NAQP Conference

“That my peers have recognized me as someone who stands apart in this dynamic business is very humbling.”

Scott Cappel, owner and founder of Sorrento Mesa Printing (http://www.sorrentomesa.com), has been named the National Association for Printing Leadership’s 2010 Printer of the Year for its NAQP division. Printing executives across the US voted for Cappel in recognition for his outstanding service and unselfish contribution of time, talent and energy to the association and to the industry. The award was presented at the organization’s recent annual conference in Chicago and represents the 23rd national accolade bestowed upon Cappel and his company since he founded Sorrento Mesa Printing in 1987.

“This is a tremendous honor for me personally and professionally,” said Cappel. “That my peers have recognized me as someone who stands apart in this dynamic business is very humbling.”

A 1984 graduate of the University of California San Diego (UCSD), Cappel began working as a pressman and sold printing in the summers between classes. After graduation, he became a research assistant at the Salk Institute of Biological Studies, where he was listed as a co-author on a number of published papers in the scientific literature. The love for business was his lifelong calling, however, and he opened Sorrento Mesa Printing shortly thereafter.

While the typical print business owner hires salespeople to bring in clients, Cappel knew from the beginning, that the company’s strength lies in its relentless commitment to customer service, starting from the clients’ first meeting with him and progressing with himself as the main strategic point of contact. Cappel’s peers view his no-salespeople commitment to personal service as an admirable strength in an industry too often viewed as impersonal and commoditized.

Cappel’s fervent embrace and love for teaching of the latest technological advances in printing, including software, hardware, and lately, QR-code generation for instant URL navigation from mobile devices and scanners, has positioned him as a true thought-leader in the printing industry. His personal approach to attracting and retaining print business has resulted in a large social network that includes well over one thousand business leaders who follow Sorrento Mesa Printing on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. He regularly shares educational articles and podcasts, and speaks to local and national business groups about the print business, marketing, and the use of social media to build brands.

Cappel and his family live in San Diego. He is a member of many national printing organizations, including the NAQP/NAPL, where he was a national conference co-chair, the Printing Industry of America, where he served as a local board member, and PODi, the Digital Printing Initiative. Earlier this year, Cappel won a NAPL PrintImage Excellence Award in the categories of offset color and self promotion for Sorrento Mesa Printing’s 2010 Calendar, an 18 by 12 inch full-color, spiral-bound wall calendar that he creates and gives to clients.
