Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, received the prestigious Brinsley Award from the Western Center on Law & Poverty at the organization’s 26th Annual Garden Party, held September 30 in Los Angeles. The honor recognized Manatt’s “extraordinary commitment to Western Center’s mission and the community through pro bono work, leadership and philanthropy.”

Established in 1967, the Western Center on Law & Poverty works to bring about system-wide change on behalf of low-income individuals and families through pivotal impact litigation, hard-hitting advocacy, negotiations with state and local government, and support for local legal aid programs throughout California.

“This is a significant honor,” said William T. Quicksilver, Manatt’s Chief Executive and Managing Partner. “We have a dedicated group of lawyers who have done important work through the Western Center to bring justice to those whose civil rights have been violated. We are proud of their accomplishments and grateful to the Western Center for the opportunity and for this award.”

The award follows closely an Award of Merit for Manatt from the Legal Aid Association of California, presented in early September. That honor was created specifically to recognize the firm’s work in pursuing passage of the landmark AB 590 in November 2009, which made California the first state in the nation to establish a right to counsel for low-income citizens in critical need. The bill was proposed to provide legal aid to individuals who could not otherwise afford legal services in cases where basic human needs, such as shelter, sustenance, health and child custody are at stake.

“It is in difficult economic times that pro bono service matters most,” said Cristin Zeisler, Manatt partner and director of pro bono services. “Our lawyers, with the full support of firm management, have redoubled their commitment to these efforts, providing vital services to hundreds of clients in engagements as critical as assisting homeless veterans, interceding on behalf of asylum seekers, and obtaining reparation payments for Holocaust survivors. We are proud to partner with the Western Center, helping to leverage their inspiring work to reach more Californians in need.”
